What Changed on Dec 15, 2025?
Before Bill C-3, Canadian citizenship by descent was capped at the first generation born abroad. If your Canadian grandparent had your parent outside Canada, the line stopped there.
That limit is gone. Descent can now pass through multiple generations born outside Canada — opening eligibility to people whose Canadian ancestor goes back three, four, or even seven generations.
Applicants need to prove, through official documentation, a direct line of descent from their Gen 0 (born in Canada to Canadian parents) to themselves.
